Some time ago, the news that "Science" first released online (First Release) of the cooperative research results of Tongji University and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology was quickly screened. This result found that the soil-derived organic matter of terrestrial origin was stripped from the surface of montmorillonite during the transportation and deposition in the ocean, and was replaced by marine-derived organic matter, but the rock-derived organic matter of terrestrial origin was also in the marine environment. It is closely combined with chlorite and does not change. This result suggests that the long-term preservation of terrestrial organic matter in marine sediments is controlled by the primary factor of layered silicate minerals.

In order to study this process, the team of Professor Liu Zhifei from Tongji University selected the South China Sea as a natural laboratory for the interaction process of organic matter and minerals. The sediments in this area are high in aluminum, which is indicative of a high terrigenous mineral content, and it is one of the most pronounced sea areas in the world with a spatial gradient of phyllosilicate mixtures. The mixing of detrital minerals from two major source topographies creates this gradient: chemical weathering of volcanic bedrocks in Luzon, Philippines, which produces abundant montmorillonite, and rapid physical weathering in Taiwanese orogenic belts , resulting in a mixture of bedrock-derived mica and chlorite-rich layered silicates. The abyssal phyllosilicate mixtures in the sediments of the northeastern South China Sea are dominated by these two sources, providing most of the mineral matrix.

Sediments obtained by Parflux Sediment Trap support the above inferences. Samples obtained from the TJ-C-DOWN sediment acquirer anchor system located at point C near Luzon show high montmorillonite content. On the contrary, close to point G in Taiwan, China, the samples obtained from the TJ-G-DOWN sediment acquirer anchor system had the lowest mineral reactivity and the highest mica and chlorite contents. In the sediment samples obtained from A, the layered silicate mixture and mineral reactivity are between points C and G.

In the study, the means of obtaining Parflux Sediment Trap is to deploy deep-sea sediment trap moorings. Time-series sediment samples are collected by this device for analysis.
